Inspiration. I constantly try to teach my students to find what it is that inspires them. Earlier this year, I was honored to present, alongside fellow New Tech Academy teacher Ginger Giessler, at TEDxFortWayne (see our presentation here). The theme for this event was “rethinking Fort Wayne”, and as a member of the New Tech Network, we believe we do this in the field of education everyday.
Now this brings me where we stand today. Inspired by what I saw at TEDxFortWayne, I thought to myself, “how can we capture this same atmosphere in our school?”. It was so awesome seeing members of the community share what they were passionate about. Why can't our kids do the same? I approached a group of students with the idea and the wheels immediately started turning. What would this look like at New Tech Academy? Who would talk? When would it be? Then all of the sudden one of the students said, ” aren't there a bunch of other schools like us around here?”. An idea was born!
Welcome to NEWTECHx: Northeast Indiana. The first ever, student-led, student-presented collaboration of New Tech's in one area. The guiding principle behind NEWTECHx is everyone has a passion, why not share it with others. Whether you want to talk about how dance inspires change or the connection between economics and public policy, YOU decide what inspires you as a New Tech student.
In collaboration with Eagle Tech, Adams Central Jet Tech, Dekalb New Tech, Lakeland Leading Edge HS, and Viking Tech, New Tech Academy at Wayne HS in Fort Wayne, IN will host the first ever NEWTECHx this coming Spring. Students from all 6 Northeast Indiana New Tech's will be invited to apply to present a 9 minute or 18 minute talk. A group of expert facilitators and administrators from all 6 schools will be challenged with narrowing the field to select the finalist that will share at the event.
As a network, New Tech's always talk about finding ways to collaborate across the network. NEWTECHx is a great example of a community recognizing that their schools aren't competing with one another, but that we are here for one purpose: give our students a stage to share their voice. We are excited to see how this unfolds and I will be updating you along the way at how NEWTECHx is impacting our community, one student at a time.
